Viruses, as a kind of non-cellular structure microorganisms, need to be parasitic in living cells to survive. The first step in its life cycle is adsorption to specific receptors on host cells. In many cases, the specificity of the receptor determines the host range and viral tropism of the virus. Angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) is a membrane receptor expressed on the surface of airway epithelial cells. ACE2 is a host cell receptor for several human coronaviruses such as SARS-CoV, HCoV-NL63, and SARS-CoV-2 (2019-nCoV), and can interact with the Spike protein of coronavirus. The findings suggest that blocking the interaction between S protein and ACE2 is an effective method for treating coronavirus infection.
